You and your accountability partner(s) MUST be engaged in a two way street. There MUST be equal engagement and benefit for all parties involved. Stephen Covey in his Classic “7 habits of highly effect people” refers to this as a WIN-WIN agreement/partnership. Without equal passion the accountability relationship will die.

Hey Ami, I’m working towards a goal can I count on you to help keep me accountable? By the way you mentioned you wanted to run a full marathon right?! How can I keep you accountable?

If you don't take this serious the passion will fade away. Its like a relationship if one takes it serious but the other does not the relationship will fail. Take it causally and your goal/ accountability will become a casualty.

We all of had that conversation with someone that was serious. When both parties truly knew the energy, feel, tone of voice and look in the eyes was different. 

You MUST recapture that feeling and tones when talking and planning  accountability. 

You MUST schedule both check-ins and deadlines… Without these two needed ingredients your accountability will die on your lips.

What leverage can you use to accelerate progress? Leverage is using a system; tool, another person,coach, group, emotion, rewards and/or consequences to accelerate your progress.  AKA: a force multiplier!

Below are real world examples of creating leverage. The more layers you stack the more progress you will make.

Money pitting is where you give someone $200 (any amount that you would feel) and each time you demonstrate a right action or progress you get a certain amount back…

Write a Commitment letter , to someone you respect about keeping on track and being accountable to a higher standard. Sometimes its easier to let yourself down than someone you have deep respect for. Download link for sample commitment letter.

Now its time to get laser focus on your specific targets. Your Success striving mechanism requires a specific target to hit to be effective. Focusing on cloudy and uncertain goals will leave you frustrated and unfulfilled. Choose 1, 2, or 3 of the bottom goals.

Close to 10 years coaching you start to recognize patters. You start to recognize that during certain times the 101 highway has slow traffic and that street cleaning happens on certain days.

People and their desire to achieve weight loss and fitness goals are no different. When people use words like “ Want” “ Should” and “ Try” I know when the traffic jams and accidents will come on their journey to a goal.  I’m not smarter than anyone its just simple Pattern recognition.

People who WANT tend to DRIFT off course

People simply do not do what they WANT or SHOULD do on a consistent basis. Most people SHOULD all over themselves.

It only works when you WANT to do it. What happens when you don't want to do it? When the mental weather in your head is foggy and rainy, when the feeling to do leaves you? You rationalize reasons why its not the right time or ignore it.

Simply put when you are pushing yourself all the time you only depend on will power which is a limited resource. There is not enough leverage or pull to have consistent follow through.

People do what is a MUST!

We can have the most up to date and cutting edge strategies and methods but if we don’t raise our level of standards we will fall back into poor behavior and habits. People who follow through on things have clearly defined standards.

Go ahead and test this out with people who A) keep failing at something and B)People who succeed or progress long term at something. Ask them what their standards in that area are. People who fail cant answer that question. People in group B usually proudly answer the question.

Two of my personal standards are 1) I mediate everyday without exception and regardless of external forces. Are there days I wake up and don't feel like meditating? Yes! I’m human but its a standard that I have made a MUST! If I don't do it I will feel a deep sense of disappointment with myself. Also, I know I can self generate my own emotions if I meditate.

2) I don't tolerate negative self talk or feelings for more than 30 seconds. Are there times I want to do it longer? Yes! But this is a standard I have made a MUST!

It’s time to make a commitment that you will no longer tolerate lower standards of health and fitness. This is the new you with new standards. Change it to a MUST! We get what we tolerate. Are you truly ready to commit to a higher lever of standards?

If you are a parent I’m positive you have certain standards about your kids that you will NEVER violate. You would never offer heroine to your kids. You have a standard of what a loving and responsible parent must never do. Say it to yourself in the mirror. “ I will raise my standards, I get what I tolerate”

Staring into the mirror and repeating something with emotion takes a passive idea in the back of your head and activates it with the full force of your expressive energy and your nervous system.  (its one of my secrets to being in a fantastic mood virtually every minute you see me)

I don’t hope I’m in a good mood… I demand it! If you have been coached by me you know I practice this.

Clearly define, raise and share your standards! 

Not doing so you will drift off course by the winds of fluctuating emotions and circumstances.  Remember the more specific a standard the greater the power and focus.

  • What is your standard about eating?
  • What is your standard about food tracking?
  • What is your self talk standard?
  • What is your workout standard?

If you can confidently answer these questions you will have a life full of joy, fulfillment, passion and bucket list trips will become a reality.

As you might have noticed, I’m obsessed with the study of both success and FAILURE!

There is a constant theme or principle that keeps showing up with consistent success or inconsistent success.

What is it?

Process oriented vs Identity oriented

What is in it for me Chris?

You can use this to achieve your fitness and weight loss goals consistently. Along with getting through current sticking points. 

I’m currently reading The Art of Learning” An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance By Josh Waitzkin.

The Chess movie “Searching for Bobby Fisher” was based on the author. He went on to become a Tia Chi world champion, Black belt in Jiu Jitsu and currently a mental performance coach to the top Venture capitals, CEO’s and athletes in the world.

In the book, learning, teaching, success, failure and mastery are the themes.  There are two approaches to learning or mastering a skill. (This is well studied by developmental psychologists)

One is called “entity” (aka Identity Oriented) the other “incremental “(aka Process Oriented)

Identity oriented people on a quest to lose weight or get in better shape, usually believe success or failure is directly linked to their unalterable and ingrained ability.

This is a FIXED mind set which gives birth to a DOWNWARD SPIRAL and the known YO-YO effect.

More on the DOWNWARD SPIRAL later.

Process oriented people on a quest to lose weight or get in better shape, usually believe success or failure is directly linked to hard work, relying on and modifying a process. They believe any skill or goal can incrementally be learned, step-by step.

This is a GROWTH mind set which gives birth to EMOTIONAL INTELLEGENCE (AWARENESS) and consistent incremental movement in the desired direction.

In summary,

Process oriented= Growth mind set + Emotional intelligence (awareness) = Incremental and consistent improvement 

Identity oriented = Fixed mind set + Downward Spiral (self-sabotage) = Inconsistent Success
